Prior to the 1999–2000 season, he was named interim head coach at the University of Memphis, displacing Tic Price. He carried the team to a 15–16 record as a coach.
Jones led the Mean Green to five consecutive 20-win seasons from 2007 to 2011, as well as two Sun Belt Championship national titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
North Texas was only the third program in Sun Belt history to reach three consecutive Sun Belt Tournament title games under Jones' leadership.
