Her debut film, Love Serenade, received the Cannes Film Festival's Caméra d'Or in 1996.

She also wrote and directed two other feature films, Walk the Talk (2000) and South Solitary (2006). (2010).

Barrett's writing for South Solitary won several awards, including the Premier's Prize in Queensland and the Premier's Prize in Western Australia.

Rush Oh! (2016) was long-listed for the 2016 Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and shortlisted for the 2016 Indie Awards for Debut Fiction and the 2016 Nita May Dobbie Award.

In 2018, her second novel, The Bus on Thursday, was published.

Shirley Barrett Cancer Diagnosis and Health Condition In 2022

Shirley Barrett's cancer diagnosis was a secret until 2018, and her health condition in 2022 is much improved. 

She didn't want to be pitied or be "one of those individuals who is always talking about illness," she says.

Barrett's fantasy became reality in 2017 when she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.

Many persons with this fatal malignancy are given only 5 years to survive.

She endured chemotherapy while editing the manuscript – "I just carried on as usual except bald" – and is still on cancer-fighting medicine.

Barrett believes the strain is exhausting for Eleanor, who feels compelled to "make the most of it" after overcoming cancer.

Following her diagnosis, the mother of two traveled to Western Australia to go whale shark snorkeling.

The 61-year-old was originally hesitant to discuss his cancer diagnosis in public.

But as of now in 2022, she is fully recovered from terminal cancer and is living a blissful life with her husband Chris Norris, and her two daughters.

Her experience is shared by The Guardian several times, and many of them found it very helpful to deal with their deal of being with cancer.
