15 Top-Selling Automakers in the world, Ranked in 2023

Analyzing the report of the first half of 2023, Toyota Motor Corp. has kept its spot as the world's top-selling automaker for the fourth time. Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Group, Stellantis, Renault Nissan Alliance, and General Motors are heading behind Toyota in continuing their sales momentum.
These rankings can change over time due to market fluctuations and the new data in the following months this year. Here are the top 15 Top-Selling Automakers in the world ranked in 2023 based on sales units from January to June 2023.
1. Toyota Group
Toyota Motor, a Japanese automaker, kept its title of the top-selling automaker for a third year in 2022 by selling 10.48 million vehicles. This year, it announced it could beat its 2019 production record by producing 10.6 million vehicles. They created over 5.5 million autos and sold some 4.9 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2023.
In Japan, the sales increased by 33.2%, but US sales declined by 0.7%. From the growing demand for Toyota Motor electrified vehicles, they succeeded and rose sales volume to 10%. They even marketed 10,191 battery electric vehicles globally alongside its Lexus brand.
2. Volkswagen Group
German multinational automotive manufacturer Volkswagen Group includes brands like Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Cupra, Seat, and more. In the first half of the year, the company sold 4,372,200 units worldwide, an improvement of 12.8 percent over the previous year's deals.
They marketed 2,331,500 vehicles in 2Q and sold 321,000 all-electric vehicles during this six-month period around the world. As per Hildegard Wortmann, with an increase of 50% in all-electric deliveries, the automaker is systematically resuming its conversion in the hope of continuing a positive trend in the coming months.
3. Hyundai Group
South Korean automotive manufacturers Hyundai Motor Group include Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis Motor. Although Hyundai's aim in 2023 is 4.32 million units of global sales, up to August 2023, the automotive industry managed to trade 347,377 units. Overall, from January to August, Hyundai Motor has increased worldwide deals up to 8.6% from the previous year.
Other brands have maintained strong sales rates, with Kia's global sales reaching 2,092,200 units from January to August.
4. Stellantis
A multinational automotive manufacturing corporation, Stellantis consists of 14 iconic automotive brands, including Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Chrysler, Peugeot, and more.
Due to the higher shipments in the first half of 2023, the net revenue increased by 12% compared to the previous year. The firm collected Net sales of €98.4 billion in this six-month period. Even stellantis positioned third in EU30 overall BEV sales while second in the U.S. market for LEV sales.
5. Renault Nissan Alliance
A French-Japanese strategic alliance between Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors, Renault–Nissan Alliance markets more than 1 in 9 vehicles worldwide.
Up to May, the worldwide sales unit reached 2.64 million. From January to June, the global sales of Renault increased by 13%, compared with the previous year, and reached 1,134,000 vehicles. Additionally, Nissan group sales unit was 480,171, an expansion of 25% compared to H1 2022.
6. General Motors
American multinational automotive manufacturing company General Motors includes four brands, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet, and all these four brands supplied double-digit year-over-year increases in the 2023 second quarter. The firm notified 2.3 million sales units in 2022 and became one of the top car sellers in America.
This year, GM sold 1,119,951 vehicles worldwide in just a month, which means GM has competed enough to attain the top position. In the 2nd quarter, global sales reached 691,978 units, increased by 19% in the US market. Compared to the 1st quarter, the 2nd quarter has ended with a flat inventory.
7. SAIC Motor
SAIC, China's largest automaker, has maintained its rapid growth momentum and sold more than 2 million vehicles in the first half of the year. In the 2nd quarter, the company sold more than 1.18 million vehicles globally, a boost of 32.5% from its first quarter.
In these six months, the company became the 2nd highest among Chinese automakers by selling 372,000 NEVs. The firm self-owned brands and their joint ventures encountered a sharp expansion in sales month by month this year. On August 7, 2023, SAIC Motor was classified as one of the top 10 automotive corporations in the world.
8. Honda Motor
By the sales, a Japanese public multinational conglomerate manufacturer, Honda Motors is the 2nd biggest automaker in Japan. In the first half of 2023, Honda Motor produced 2,017,756, while the total sales increased by 97% in the Japanese market with 282,007.
The firm has gained $2.76 billion in operating profit in the three months through June, beating the estimated forecast. In 2011, it was the 8th largest automobile manufacturer, and the automaker made a profit from its strong sales in the US market.
9. Suzuki
A Japanese multinational corporation, Suzuki Motor was the 11th biggest automaker globally by production. Through its sales expansion, it has ranked among one of the top 10 automotive selling firms. In 2023, the sales have increased by 104.1% from the previous year, with 1,786,260 unit sales in these seven months, producing 1,881,275 units, as per Suzuki global news.
The company managed to sell 1.5 million in the first half of the year. In 2022, the worldwide sale was only around 3 million, receiving the position of 9 top-selling automaker companies.
10. BYD
A Chinese multinational manufacturing company, BYD Co. Ltd automotive subsidiary BYD Auto produces battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Its sales were mainly based in Mainland China, which rose into global markets and hit sales in 2022.
In the first half of 2023, the automotive company's cumulative sales reached 1,255,637 units, an increase of 95% year on year. In July, BYD's sales increased by 61% compared to last year, with 262,161 NEVs sales, and gained achievement broking record of June 2023. In these seven months, they marketed 1,517,798 units, an increase of 89%.
11. BMW Group
German multinational manufacturer BMW includes four brands (Mini, BMW, BMW Motorrad, and Rolls-Royce). In the first half of 2023, the company sold 1,214,864 automobiles worldwide. Corresponded to the same time the previous year, the overall sales have increased by 4.7% in the automotive segment.
Europe is the strongest market for the BMW Group, selling 448,623 BMW and Mini brand cars, while these two marketed 511,628 (Asia), 224,686 (US), and 392,580 (China) vehicles. With the solid operational performance, the automaker foresees positive momentum during the second half of 2023.
12. Changan Automobile
Chinese automobile manufacturer Changan Automobile Co. Ltd is the smallest car produced by BIG Four of China, which deals in automobiles under the brands ( Oshan, Changan, and Kaicene and two joint ventures). Until this year, Changan expected to raise its volume to 2.8 million by launching its 12 brand-new models.
Chairman Zhu Huarong said the group deals will reach 4 billion units by 2025. In the first half of 2023, the cumulative sales reached 1,215,681 vehicles, a boost of 7.99% compared to the last year. Also, the company's wholly-owned brands increased 13.39% volume over the previous period with 1,026,506 units.
13. Ford
According to the sales report of Ford Motor Co., the group maintained its spot as a top-selling brand and manufacturer in the United States. In the first half of 2023, the company increased its sales by 10%, with 1,007,568 sales units worldwide. Through the strong inventory, the Ford brand achieved higher sales this year.
The group continued its sales momentum with Super Duty Pickups, which played a vital role in making F-Series a top seller in the global market. In the strength of its electric automobiles, trucks, and new launch vehicles, in the 2nd quarter, Ford was recognized as America's best-selling brand.
14. Mercedes-Benz Group
German multinational automotive corporation Mercedes-Benz Group is the 10th largest car manufacturer in the world in the sales unit. With the sustained demand for luxury vehicles and premium vans, the manufacturer succeeded in achieving strong sales results.
The sales rate from the first half of 2023 remains at around the same level, with over 1 million sales units worldwide. As a result, Mercedes-Benz Group believed that full-year sales were seen at the prior-year level.
15. FAW Group
The Chinese automobile manufacturer FAW Group is 2nd largest car producer in China, which assembled 921,445 vehicles in the first quarter. The company deals with and manufactures automobiles under brands( Hongqi, Bestune, and two joint ventures).
The goal of the company is to sell 4 million vehicles in 2023. Even in the 1st Qatar, the sales improved by 74.3%. Its brand Hongqi sales reached 70,060 units, Bestune sold 16,641 autos, and FAW-Volkswagen sold 550,869.
