At the time of her passing, Kathy and Steve had been married for thirteen years and had two children, Erin and Monica.

They were preparing to divorce but wanted to work things out, according to Steve, who said that at that point, she felt she no longer wanted to be his wife. Sherry, her sister, rejects his assertions, nevertheless.

She claims that Kathy was beginning to move on with her life and that the marriage was beyond saving. Further, she asserts that Kathy had immediate plans to divorce Steve. Just before she passed away, he moved out, but he insisted that they remained amicable.

After two prior mistrials, Steve was judged to be financially responsible for Kathy's passing in a civil case in 1999. He had to give her family $200,000 in payment. Sadly, their 28-year-old daughter Monica passed away in 2011. Erin, their daughter, is still living today. This case was highlighted on Cold Justice in 2018. Numerous witnesses were questioned in it. They also discovered a fresh eyewitness who claimed to have seen Steve leaving the ditch where Kathy's car was discovered the night of her murder.

Steve maintains that he was not at fault for Kathy's passing and feels that because he is her estranged husband, everyone is presuming that he is.
