Selena Quintanilla Parents
Selena Quintanilla was the youngest child of former musician Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcella Ofelia Quintanilla (née Samora). Jehovah's Witnesses were Selena's parents.
She was six years old when Quintanilla Jr. first became aware of her musical talent. Selena and her siblings A. B. Quintanilla III (on bass guitar) and Suzette Quintanilla (on drums), would frequently perform at Papa Gayo's, which Quintanilla Jr. opened in Lake Jackson after quitting his job as a shipping clerk at Dow Chemical.
After filing for bankruptcy, the family's home was taken away. They made their home in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Quintanilla Jr. began working as the band's manager and promoter for Selena y Los Dinos, a group he had officially formed with his kids.

They performed at weddings, quinceaneras, fairs, and street corners because they needed the money. The rigors of Selena's concerts and travel schedule started interfering with her education as her fame as a singer increased. When she was in the seventh grade, her father pulled her out of school.
The family used a renovated bus that Quintanilla Jr. christened "Big Bertha," as their tour vehicle.
The family had to sing for food during the early years of touring and barely had enough money for gas. Selena collaborated with the record company Freddie Records to release Selena y Los Dinos, her debut LP, in 1984.

Selena Quintanilla Family Background
Eulogio Quintanilla Longoria Sr., Quintanilla's paternal great-grandfather, was a native of Heroica Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. A.B. Quintanilla, a musician, and Suzette Quintanilla are her siblings.
Chris Pérez, a musician, songwriter, and author, was Selena's husband until her passing.
Six hundred people, primarily family members, attended Selena's funeral at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas, on April 3, 1995. A Corpus Christi & San Antonio radio station broadcast the service live without the family's permission.
Quintanilla Jr. aimed to keep Selena's image wholesome and familial. Beer companies offered her sponsorship in 1989, but her father declined. Because Selena was a female performer in the heavily male-dominated music industry, Tejano clubs frequently turned her down for bookings.
Latina journalist Maria Garcia "goes on an affectionate, revelatory quest to comprehend how Selena has become a potent symbol for conflicts around race, class, and body politics in the United States" in the 10-part podcast miniseries Anything for Selena, which was broadcast in 2021 by WBUR and Futuro Media.
The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Selena in the same year, and her family accepted it on her behalf.
