He graduated as the best student in his class with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political philosophy from Fordham University in 1988.

He obtained his Juris Doctor in 1991 while attending the University of Chicago Law School and serving as managing editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.

Cipollone served as a legal clerk for Judge Danny Boggs of the Sixth Circuit United States Court of Appeals from 1991 to 1992, he was William P. Barr's assistant.

Prior to becoming White House Counsel, he was a partner at the legal firm Stein, Mitchell, Cipollone, Beato & Missner, where he practiced commercial litigation.

He was formerly a partner at Kirkland & Ellis. From 1992 to 1993, he served as President Donald Trump's attorney, representing companies including Radio Ingraham LLC and Sony Entertainment.
