Is Jane Campion Really Sick? Her Illness And Latest Health Condition

Our critic was reminded of his own night of 'botched fanciness' and racial slights by Jane Campion's remark about Venus and Serena Williams.

It's why Jane Campion, the front-runner for best director at the BAFTAs, was absent. And that's why, following her clumsy Critics Choice Awards speech (and subsequent apology), there was a swell of unrest in Los Angeles last week, with many speculating aloud whether the resulting micro-scandal would cost the 67-year-old New Zealand filmmaker what appeared to be an impending Oscar victory.

Jane Campion is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer from New Zealand. She also was the first woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards two times. Campion is also the first female filmmaker as she won the Palme d'Or with The Piano (1993), for which she also received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. She earned the Silver Lion award for directing The Power of the Dog at the 78th Venice International Film Festival (2021).

Is Jane Campion Really Sick? Her Illness And Latest Health Condition

There are not many details revealed of Jane Campion's sickness.

However, recently, she stated, "I am so sorry, I got COVID-19. I am not very sick, but I cannot be there." She wrote it to the writer's panel at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

Here is the tweet of her statement.

Jane Campion joined the Chelsea Art School in London in 1976 and traveled extensively around Europe.

It was in the year 1981 when she received a graduate diploma in visual arts (painting) from the University of Sydney's Sydney College of the Arts. Campion's subsequent cinema work was influenced in part by her art school degree; she has named painter Frida Kahlo and sculptor Joseph Beuys as inspirations even later in her career.

Campion's discontent with painting's constraints led her to the cinema, where she made her debut short film, Tissues, in 1980. Then, she enrolled herself in the Australian Film, Television, and Radio School in 1981, where she produced many more short films before graduating in 1984.

Colin David Englert, an Australian who served as a second unit director on The Piano, married her in 1992. Jasper, their first child, was born in 1993. In the same manner, Alice Englert, their second child, was born in 1994 and is an actress. In 2001, the couple divorced.
