On November 14, 1934, Machado was born in Caonao, a small village near Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Gus came to the U.S. at the age of 15 from Cuba.

After graduating from Edwards Military Institute in North Carolina and Greenville College, he began working for the Caterpillar Tractor Company in Illinois.

Machado married his first wife at the age of 18, worked for the Caterpillar Tractor Company in Illinois after graduation, and then moved to Miami with his family in 1956.

He told the Miami News that he knew what he wanted to do as an adult when he was 11.

In the mid-1940s, Gus and his father Eduardo strolled by the island's largest General Motors showroom. The youngster ran his gaze over the gleaming vehicle lot before looking at his father and promising that he would own it all one day.

He bought a petrol station on North Miami Avenue and 17th Street with $2,000 borrowed from his father and $2,000 from personal savings. He began gradually shipping secondhand autos from this location to Cuba.

Gus Machado passed away at the age of 87. The businessman died in his Coconut Grove home on Monday, May 17, 2022.

Machado's death cause has not been revealed yet.

Machado was known for investing his time and energy in the South Florida community and developing an award-winning dealership in Gus Machado Ford.

He established the Gus Machado Family Foundation in 2008 to donate to a variety of philanthropic organizations and leave a legacy for his family and community.

Machado had married his associate Gloria Machado. Unfortunately, she died in a surfside collapse at the age of 71. According to Miami-Dade Police, authorities recovered her body on July 7, 2019, and identified her the next day.

Gus Machado's estimated net worth was $72 million, according to networthroll.com. 

His primary source of financial savings was his primary job.

Machado founded three companies that have significant clout in the sale of G.M. vehicles in Puerto Rico: American Auto Sales, Big Trail Auto Sales, and G.M. Auto Export.

After purchasing Seipp Buick in 1982 and Johnson Ford in 1984, Machado quickly became Dade County's leading Ford dealer.
