Gudaf Tsegay Hails From Tigray: Home To Ancient Muslims Place Of Worship
As mentioned on Letsrun, Gudaf Tsegay won her first global outdoor title in the 5000 meters at the 2022 World Athletics Championship at Hayward Field; a bearded man wearing dark blue shorts and a white patterned shirt unbuttoned below his chest ran onto the field, lifted Tsegay and Lestesenbet Gidey and, after a brief chase, was led away from the track.
If you have been following what's been going on in Ethiopia for the last year and a half, you may have noticed that the guy was carrying the red-and-yellow flag -the flag of the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The Tigray region has been the center of a brutal conflict between the Tigray People's Liberation Front and the Ethiopian government.
Supporting the victory of Tsegay, more than two dozens protestor marched around the Hayward field concourse with Tigray flags, posters, and shirts reading the phrases 'free Tigray' and 'Tigray is a country' while chanting words such as 'end genocide of Tigray.' And at that crowd was the man who ran to carry the winner on the track; he mentioned that he was initially from the Tigray region but now lives in Texas.
