The 92-year-old comedian actor was born to a stenographer and a salesman in West Plains, Missouri and grew up in Danville, Illinois. Dyke is the elder brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke who is best known for his role in the television series “Coach”.
Van was fascinated by his mother’s religious family in his youth and even thought of making his career in the government but a single drama class in high school changed his mentality of getting involved in the ministry.
In his autobiography, he mentioned, “I suppose that I never completely gave up my childhood idea of being a minister.
Only the medium and the message changed. I have still endeavored to touch people’s souls, to raise their spirits and put smiles on their faces.”
The actor left high school in 1944. However, he continued school and received a diploma at the age of 84.
Although he was determined to join the pilot training in the United States Army Air Forces during the World War II, he had to abandon it as he was denied for being underweight.
