For 47 years, until his passing, Malone was wed to Duke University's Maureen Quilligan, an English professor. While he was attending Harvard, they became friends.

They had one child together (Maggie). Since 2000, they have lived in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and have a second house in Connecticut. Malone supported the Burwell School Historic Site and served on its board of directors.

The daughter of Armene (née Nalbandian) and Joseph Barbeau, a Mobil Oil public relations manager, Barbeau was born on June 11, 1945, in Sacramento, California.

Her father's background included French Canadian, Irish, and German, while her mother was of Armenian descent. On her father's side, she has a sister named Jocelyn and a half-brother named Robert Barbeau who still lives in the Sacramento region.

She played Berthe in the acclaimed musical Pippin with the Broadway Touring Company in 2015.
