Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was at risk of being arrested after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations declared him a suspect in a global criminal organization.

After learning that the Commission for University Education had revoked its prior recognition of a degree certificate Sakaja had submitted to get approval to run for governor of Nairobi, things got worse for him.

The intervention of Uganda's Minister of Education, Janet Museveni, who reportedly sent government representatives to look for proof of Sakaja's tenure at the university, is said to be what precipitated the significant uptick in the controversy regarding his eligibility to run for governor of Nairobi.

Sakaja-Kinoti Drama Explained: Why Is Sakaja Johnson Arrested?

Johnson Sakaja, a Nairobi senator, was in danger of being arrested Thursday night when the Directorate of Criminal Investigations claimed that he was a suspect in a global criminal organization, even as the "fake degree" scandal garnered attention from Ugandan authorities.

In a dramatic escalation, Sakaja accused President Kenyatta, his patron who propelled him to the national political stage, of being to blame for his problems. This signaled a severe rift between the two, who came to power in 2013 through their opulent party, The National Alliance.

As it became known that the Commission for University Education had previously disapproved of a degree certificate that had been used to allow Sakaja to run for governor of Nairobi, tensions between Sakaja and the government grew on Wednesday.

Sakaja, however, had a reprieve last night after the IEBC dispute resolution committee dismissed three petitions against him due to the litigants' absence.

A petitioner who has urged the electoral commission's dispute resolution committee to cancel Sakaja's clearance to run for governor has questioned his degree, which Sakaja has defended. One qualification to be eligible to compete for the top county seat is a university degree from an approved institution.
