Hiran's nationality and ethnicity have been considered Sri Lankan and black, respectively. Hiran Abeysekera was born in 1986, making him 34 years old.

Abeysekera earned his education at Nalanda College in Colombo. After getting a diploma from the Lanka Children's and Youth Theatre Foundation, he took the lead in a British Council production of Peter Shaffer's Equus in 2007.

He was able to audition for drama schools in the UK due to this, and he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In 2011, he became only the second Sri Lankan to graduate from acting school.

Just recently, Hiran won the award for best actor for the stage adaptation of Life of Pi. Based on the Booker Prize-winning novel, Life of Pi was named the best new play and scooped several technical prizes.

Hiran Abeysekera, who plays the lead in the play, was also named best actor, while the seven actors who play the tiger shared the award for best supporting actor.

He paid respect to Sri Lanka, saying the country was going through a "difficult moment now... I think of you and wish I was there with you."

Sri Lanka is in the midst of a severe financial crisis, and there have been recent protests asking for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation.

In 2011, Abeysekera made his professional theatrical debut as Valere in Tartuffe with the English Touring Theatre. Abeysekera first appeared in the Hulu series Find Me in Paris in 2018, playing Dash Khan till 2019.

He earned a UK Theatre Award for his performance as Pi Patel in Lolita Chakrabarti's adaptation of Life of Pi at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in 2019. 

In 2019, Hiran was also cast in the role of Leonardo da Vinci in the Hampstead Theatre's new drama Botticelli in the Fire. At the Royal National Theatre, he played Sunil Sharma in the drama Behind the Beautiful Forevers.
