Mindy Kaling | Biography

Mindy Kaling was born as Vera Mindy Chokalingam on June 24, 1979. Mindy Kaling is her professional name. She is famous for her multi-dimensional talent in acting, comedy, writing and producing. She is highly recognized for her role on the NBC sitcom The Office as Kelly Kapoor. Mindy has written, produced and directed many episodes of the sitcom. At present, she is starring as Mindy Lahiri in the FOX sitcom The Mindy Project of which she is also the creator. The movies like This Is the End, Wreck-It Ralph, and The Five-Year Engagement earned her much fame and recognition. For producing The Office, she was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for five times consecutively. She was also nominated in 2010 for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for writing the episode Niagara. Most significantly and recently, she has been named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2013.

Kaling was born to Hindu parents (Tamil father and Bengali mother) who come from India. Her birth place is Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her mother Swati Roysircar was a gynecologist and her father Avu is an architect by profession. She was named Mindy when she was still in her mother’s womb. At the time, her parents were staying in Nigeria and were planning to move to United States. They heard and liked the name American name Mindy from the TV show Mork & Mindy. The first name Vera of her original name refers to the incarnation of a Hindu goddess. Mindy attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols in Cambridge, Massachusetts from where graduated in 1997. After the high school, she went to Dartmouth College from where she graduated with Bachelors in Playwriting in 2001. While studying the college, she created the comic strip Badly Drawn Girl in the daily newspaper of the college as well as wrote for Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, a humor magazine of the college. Besides, she became the member of the cappella group called The Rockapellas and the improvisational comedy troupe named The Dog Day Players. In her second year at the college, she worked as an intern on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Mindy is the co-writer of the play Matt & Ben along with her best friend Brenda Withers. In 2003, she appeared in the role Ben Affleck in the play. Matt & Ben was considered as Time Magazine’s Top Ten Theatrical Events of The Year. Her appearance is found on many other shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Comedy Death-Ray. She is the writer of Saturday Night Live, for one of its episodes. Mindy started her film career by debuting in The 40-Year-Old Virgin which was soon followed by another film Unaccompanied Minors where she performed as a waitress. She played a small segment in License to Wed, which also starred actors from The Office. She was seen in Night at the Museum: Battle of Smithsonian recently. She is known for voicing Taffyta Muttonfudge in an animated comedy film, Wreck-It Ralph. In No Strings Attached 2011, she portrayed the role as a doctor, roommate and colleague of Emma, played by Natalie Portman. In the 2012 romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement, Kaling appeared to play the role of Vanetha.

Mindy Kaling has written a comic memoir called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?(And Other Concerns). The book holds a collection of essays based on her early life and career by interlinking with short observational essays about her friends, family and relationships. She used to maintain a blog called Things I’ve Bought That I Love which became active again from September 29, 2011 on her website. In 2012, she wrote the comedy The Mindy Project which she pitched to Fox. Initially, she was featured as the lead actress in the show while she worked as a producer too at the same time. The television series was aired by Fox in 2012 at 9:30 EST. She was featured on the cover of RELEVANT, a Christian lifestyle magazine, November/December 2013 issue.
